Design allows us to share and expand our experiences, and I aim to inspire empathy and create social impact through interactive design work.

Journey

Growing up in Taiwan, where political and social activities have been increasing, I began to develop social awareness at a young age. By volunteering for non-profits and campaigns related to immigration, gender, and inclusivity, I have personally confronted widespread social problems and started wondering about my own role in society.

After discovering my passion for creating, I came to the U.S. to pursue design as my career, and found out that interaction design is my way to navigate and influence the world— reimagining kinder, more humane ways for people to interact with one another.

Solving systematic and complex social problems is hard, but I am looking forward to challenging myself in these areas as well as other undiscovered callings.

Approach

Research

Research is understanding the world through curiosity and empathy which I practiced even before becoming a designer. Allowing myself to be exploratory and experiencing ambiguity while researching enriches me as a designer as well as a person. I do a combination of secondary research and primary research to understand individuals in context.

Synthesis & System Mapping

The analytical part of me likes to connect the dots to discover the root causes of problems. I turn research findings into insights and make sense of the big picture through system mappings. Some of my favorite tools are mental models, semantic profiles, concept maps, and experience flows.

Ideation

Being bold and free in the ideation process makes being designer worthwhile. I turn my insights into “How might we” questions to branch out ideas. I like to brainstorm/ cheat storm by sketching out ideas on sticky notes and using dot-voting with teams to pick the ones with potential. Then, I will use mood boards, wireframes, and storyboards to further develop my concepts.

Prototypes

Prototyping is my way to check whether my understanding of problems is aligning with reality. Before pushing pixels on screens, I check if the concepts and flows are approachable and ethical through low-fidelity prototype testing. Then, I develop iterations and learn new skills and knowledge that it takes to build them. Examples of my work are screen-based products, physical objects, service design, and I am currently exploring AI algorithms.

Writing

Writing is a tool for me to reflect honestly on myself, document my work, and share ideas to creative communities. I try my best to write down my process and thoughts every time I finish a project.
